About Internet Speed Testing

What We Measure

  • Ping (Latency): The time it takes for data to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower ping means less lag for gaming and video calls.
  • Download Speed: How quickly your connection can retrieve data from the internet, measured in Megabits per second (Mbps). Higher download speeds enable faster browsing, streaming, and downloading.
  • Upload Speed: How quickly your connection can send data to the internet, measured in Megabits per second (Mbps). Higher upload speeds improve video calls, file sharing, and content creation.

Speed Requirements for Common Activities

Activity Minimum Download Speed Recommended Download Speed Minimum Upload Speed Recommended Ping
Web Browsing 1 Mbps 5 Mbps 0.5 Mbps < 100 ms
SD Video Streaming 3 Mbps 5 Mbps 0.5 Mbps < 100 ms
HD Video Streaming 5 Mbps 10 Mbps 1 Mbps < 100 ms
4K Video Streaming 25 Mbps 35 Mbps 1 Mbps < 100 ms
Online Gaming 3 Mbps 15 Mbps 1 Mbps < 50 ms
Video Calls 1 Mbps 3 Mbps 1.5 Mbps < 150 ms
HD Video Calls 3 Mbps 5 Mbps 3 Mbps < 100 ms
File Downloads 5 Mbps 25+ Mbps 0.5 Mbps < 200 ms
Cloud Backup 1 Mbps 5 Mbps 5 Mbps < 300 ms

Tips for Improving Your Speed Test Results

  1. Connect your device directly to your router with an Ethernet cable for the most accurate results.
  2. Close other applications and pause any downloads or streaming during the test.
  3. Test at different times of day to account for network congestion.
  4. Try different devices to identify if an issue is with your network or a specific device.
  5. Restart your modem and router before testing if you're experiencing unexpectedly slow speeds.
