How to set up your Wi-Fi connection – simple steps to go online in no time

Over the years, the Wi-Fi router installation process has become way more easier. But, you’ll need to dig in a little deeper to get the best out of your new router before going ahead with the standard installation route. Don’t assume that you are good to go just because all your cables and wires are plugged in and the lights have turned green.This doesn’t mean your network has reached its prime nor is its security is as good as you would think it would be. If you’ve just moved to a new place and need to get your internet hooked up or you need guidance with the troubleshooting of a wired connection, we have a few tips that will help you get connect your computer to the internet.

LOCATION

Find a place that doesn’t block your network and is free from causing any wireless interference. Make sure the router isn’t near the windows, walls or the microwave.

CONNECT MODEM TO ROUTER

Use Ethernet cable to connect with the router WAN port. Then, connect the other end of the cable to the modem. When you’re connecting your equipment, be sure to power off the cable, fiber, or DSL modem from your internet service provider (ISP).

CONNECT LAPTOP/COMPUTER TO ROUTER

Use another Ethernet cable and plug one end into the the router LAN port and the other end into the Ethernet port of your computer/laptop. Once your network is set up, you won’t need the wiring and you can remove the cable.

TURN POWER ON IN THE MODEM, ROUTER, AND COMPUTER

Follow the order above to turn on your devices. Once the modem is switched on and the lights appear, turn the router on.Then, turn on the computer.

ROUTER MANAGEMENT WEB PAGE

Open a browser and enter the router administration page’s IP address. This is otherwise called as the router documentation and is usually like 192.168.1.1. The manual will include the login information.

ROUTER DEFAULT ADMIN PASSWORD AND USERNAME CHANGE

Go to a section called Administration and this setting will be on the router administration page. Create a strong password you won’t forget.

WPA2 SECURITY

This crucial setting is found in the wireless security section of the router administration page. Choose the type of encryption for use and enter a passphrase of minimum eight characters. The password will be strong based on the number of characters.

WIRELESS NETWORK NAME CHANGE (SSID)

You can identify your network in an easier and convenient manner. Choose a specific name for your SSID (Service Set Identifier) in the router administration page’s wireless network information section.

WIRELESS ADAPTER SET UP

Remove the cable connecting your computer with the router once its configuration settings have been saved. If a wireless adapter hasn’t been installed or isn’t built in, you then plug a USB or PC card wireless adapter into the laptop/computer. Either the drivers will get installed by the computer automatically or you might have to use the setup CD given to you along with the adapter.

CONNECT THE NEW WIRELESS NETWORK

Find the new network you want to set up on your computer and other wireless devices, and get connected.
